This project involved creating both a wordmark and article spreads for a hypothetical publication that convey meaning and establish a visual language. For my magazine, I created AMPED, a publication that embraces the vulnerable and authentic side of making music and promotes musicians who resist the temptation to conform to trends. I wanted my designs to be loud, bold, and embody nonconformity and individualism.

To begin, I gathered a wide range of typefaces that could be used for my wordmark. Using printouts of those typefaces, tracing paper, and sharpie markers, I created analog sketches that explored various directions.

I then brought my sketches into Adobe Illustrator and began a series of digital iterations before refining the final wordmark.

For the final, I altered the width of all the letterforms to be equal except the “A”, creating an anomaly. The “A” is meant to personify artists who are true to themselves and their music, even if it opposes the mainstream. To further emphasize this message, I chose a typeface with a heavy weight to communicate loudness and boldness.

In the initial stages of my design my focus was typography. I explored a variety of typeface pairings and grid systems that would serve as the foundation of my article spreads.

Gamay and Drummond Variable were paired for their humanist qualities that make them feel written rather than engineered, which emphasizes the need for emotion and vulnerability when creating authentic music.

The Celtic typeface PaladinFLF was incorporated into the second article specifically to exhibit the unique identity of Fontaines DC, an Irish rock band formed in Dublin.

I integrated fragmented type and image to communicate the publication's theme of nonconformity. The dynamic nature of these compositions also aligns with the fluctuation of sound and volume present within the artists' music.
